Founded in 2005, Tintop Cairn Terriers began with a single goal: to preserve the working spirit and sound structure of the Cairn Terrier while producing healthy, happy family companions. Our kennel name comes from the rolling hills of our property, where Cairns have roamed freely for generations.
We believe that a responsible breeder prioritizes health, temperament, and conformation above all. Every Tintop breeding is carefully planned after extensive health testing: including liver shunt (PSS) screening via bile acid test, patella evaluation, cardiac exams, and eye clearance. [citation:3][citation:10] Our dogs are raised in our home, with exposure to everyday sounds, children, and other animals — ensuring they are well-adjusted from day one.
Our puppies go home at 10–12 weeks, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and with a starter kit including food, blanket, and health records. We provide a lifetime support contract and require that any puppy not suitable for showing be spayed/neutered. We follow up regularly and welcome visits.
The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest native British breeds, originating in the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye. They were bred to work among the cairns (rock piles) to flush out foxes, badgers, and otters. For centuries, they were grouped with Scottish and West Highland Terriers as "Skye Terriers". In 1910, the Kennel Club officially recognized the Cairn Terrier as a distinct breed. [citation:1] Famous for being Toto in The Wizard of Oz, the Cairn remains a beloved companion worldwide. [citation:3]
We are members of the Cairn Terrier Club of America and adhere to their code of ethics. We limit our breeding to one or two litters per year to give each puppy individual attention. We never sell to pet stores or brokers. All breeding stock is health tested and registered.
